Five new athletes are in-line for the Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award, facilitated by the British Elite Athletes Association. This month’s shortlist is dominated by British Swimming stars after their incredible success at the World Aquatics Championships, with all five chosen for their personal triumphs over the last few weeks.Athletes on the World Class Programme will vote for their winner from: Piers Gilliver (wheelchair fencing), Maria Lyle (para-athletics), Matt Richards (swimming) and the joint pair of Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson (diving).Gilliver was initially nominated by fellow WCP athlete Gemma Collis, who was herself shortlisted in March this year, for earning double individual gold at the Warsaw World Cup upon his return from a head injury after six months.Lyle also bagged medals following a tough time with injury, returning from the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris with bronze medals in both the T35 100m and 200m events. Having had foot surgery in 2022, she subsequently spoke about the “emotional journey” of the build-up and her lack of belief before racing.Richards enjoyed enormous success in the pool last month, notching three British records in two days, becoming world 200m freestyle champion, scooping gold in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay and breaking the European record to claim bronze in the mixed 4x100 freestyle relay. And finally, Spendolini-Sirieix and Toulson follow the footsteps of Ben Cutmore and Matthew Dixon as a nominated diving pair after making history by winning Great Britain’s first World Championships diving medal in a women’s event.Elite athletes can vote for their Athlete of the Month now by heading to their latest BEAA email, with the winner to be confirmed across the BEAA’s website and social media channels shortly.Good luck to everyone shortlisted!
