Five new nominees are up for the BEAA’s Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award after managing unique personal successes in a September that showed the best of British sport. The country’s elite athletes excelled across the globe, with a huge number being worthy potential nominees, and the final five each managed triumphs that went beyond competitive accomplishment alone. They are: Anna Burnet and John Gimson jointly (sailing), Tom Gale (athletics), Hector Pardoe (swimming) and Kim Woods (canoeing).Partners Anna and John broke a world record towards the end of the month by sailing from Belfast Ballyholme to Port Patrick in just over 90 minutes; bettering the existing time by seven minutes. In testing conditions, the pair didn’t just fly across the water, they also took on the challenge to raise awareness of the climate crisis.Tom made a truly remarkable comeback when he returned to competition for the first time in 766 days. The high-jumper endured pain in his left patellar tendon before the Tokyo Olympics, and the final became his last event for almost two years following a series of setbacks and other injuries. Last month, he entered the Palio Citta' della Quercia in Rovereto, Italy, and won.Hector broke a 26-year world record by eight minutes while raising money for charity as he swam the length of Lake Windermere in 3:40.28. Not content with resting there, he then spoke to the BBC to raise awareness of water pollution, and came fourth in the final leg of the LEN Open Water Swim Cup 2023.Last but not least, Kimberley enjoyed a triumphant ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships: winning her first individual world title in the kayak cross and silver in the women’s C1. Shortly afterwards she appeared on an episode of Team GB’s Sport AF (And Female), sharing her mental health story. This month, elite athletes can vote for their Athlete of the Month by heading to the vote on the BEAA’s Instagram Story, with the winner to be confirmed shortly. Please note, only the votes of athletes currently on UK Sport’s World Class Programme will be counted.Good luck to everyone shortlisted!
