Elite British athletes from over 40 sports have voted Welsh cyclist Emma Finucane as their Athlete of the Month for January 2023.The award is facilitated by the British Elite Athletes’ Association, with Finucane receiving over 50% of the vote from elite athletes on World Class Programmes, who are eligible to decide their winner from a shortlist of four each month.Finucane earned the inaugural trophy having ended the month on a high by winning a clean sweep of four titles at the British National Track Championships in Newport. Securing wins in the sprint, keirin and 500m time trial, and the team sprint alongside Katy Marchant and Milly Tanner, the 20-year-old became the first sprinter to achieve an unbeaten record at the championships since Marchant in 2015.She took the women’s national 500m title in just 33.981, and has previously won two bronze medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Winning silver at the 2023 Track Elite European Championships in Switzerland, Finucane sustained her success into February.Finucane topped the nominee list comprised of para-swimmer Tully Kearny, runner Lynsey Sharp and skeleton racer Matt Weston, each of whom enjoyed stellar personal months.
