Four athletes have been shortlisted for the British Elite Athletes Association’s Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award for January.

This athlete-led prize celebrates the sporting achievements and personal triumphs of Britain’s elite sportspeople, with the winner selected by those on the World Class Programme.

January’s shortlist comprises: Mia Brookes (snowboarding), Adam Burgess (slalom canoeing), Team Hall (bobsleigh) and Penny Healey (archery).

All four had reason to celebrate in the opening month of 2025.

Mia landed five medals in January. The teenager kicked off 2025 with an impressive performance in Klagenfurt to take gold in the Big Air event and repeated the trick with a dominant display in the Slopestyle discipline in Laax to secure her fourth consecutive World Cup podium after claiming bronze in Kreischberg. She ended the month with a silver in the Slopestyle at the X Games and a bronze on her debut in the non-Olympic Knuckle Huck discipline.

Adam claimed a landmark first international individual gold medal at the Oceania Championships in Penrith, Australia. He was a model of consistency throughout, winning in qualifying and finishing third in the semi-final before finishing the final more than half a second ahead of the rest of the field.

Team Hall – the four-man bobsleigh team piloted by Brad Hall – enjoyed a medal-laden January. Greg Cackett, Leon Greenwood, Arran Gulliver and Taylor Lawrence competed alongside Brad across the month as the team picked up two World Cup gold medals, a silver and a bronze. They also recorded their highest speed of the season en route to their third-place finish in St Moritz.

Completing the shortlist is archery’s Penny Healey who shot 12 perfect arrows to win the recurve women’s title at the first Indoor Archery World Series event of 2025 in Nimes, France. “I don’t know what just happened,” she said afterwards. “I don’t think I’ve ever done that before.”

Elite athletes can vote for their Athlete of the Month by heading to their latest BEAA email, with the winner to be confirmed shortly.

Former elite athletes can get involved via the British Elite Athletes Alumni app – which they can register for here!
