Will Bjergfelt has been named the British Elite Athletes Association’s (BEAA) Athletes’ Athlete of the Month for August.

Will came out on top in a vote amongst Britain’s elite sportspeople after breaking the UCI Men’s C5 Hour Record.

The 46-year-old covered 51.471km, 3.902km further than the previous record, which had stood for 11 years, also becoming the first para-cyclist to break the 50km mark.

“The experience itself was absolutely amazing,” Will told the BEAA.

“I almost couldn't have wished for anything to have gone differently on the day. It was just perfect for me.

“I feel honoured to have done it in so many ways and to have my name now written into the history books is pretty incredible.”

The BEAA presents the Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award on behalf of its members, elite sportspeople in Olympic, Paralympic and progression sports who receive funding from UK Sport’s World Class Programme.

The award recognises the many ways British athletes inspire the public and their fellow sportspeople, including sporting achievements and personal triumphs such as injury comebacks, awareness raising and charitable efforts.

Will was up against Will Bayley (para-table tennis), Hector Pardoe (swimming) and Jazmin Sawyers (athletics) for August’s award and says being recognised by his fellow athletes is particularly special.

“I’m absolutely amazed [to have won],” he added.

“I know that there are so many people out there who do so many amazing things.

“To be nominated for the award is amazing and to have won it is really nice.

“I got selected as a reserve for Paris and that hurt mentally. Last year was filled with a lot of disappointment from that perspective, so to hit back this year and show that I am still world class as an athlete is really nice.”

Congratulations to Will and to Hector, Jazmin and Will Bayley for being nominated.

Elite athletes can get involved in future Athletes' Athlete of the Month votes by taking part via the BEAA's monthly member emails.
