With just over 150 days to go until the Tokyo Paralympics get under way, the BAC today joined forces with the British Paralympic Association to host an athlete webinar on classification.Details of the content will be made available to those who couldn't attend, but here, our Athlete Support Manager, Hannah Dean, explains the support process in place when an athlete comes to us with a concern over classification."Classification is a consistent and vital part of para-sport: all of our members on a Paralympic World-Class Programme will have had prior experience of being ‘classified’ and all that it entails."However, regardless of your level of experience, due to the often-complex nature of classification, and the frequency of policy and procedural changes, it’s completely normal to at times feel confused, overwhelmed or slightly lost in the process."At the BAC, we can offer advice and support to athletes on all areas of the classification process, to help navigate your rights and responsibilities throughout."When an athlete gets in contact with us, they will be assigned an Athlete Support Manager, who will liaise with the athlete to understand what their concern is and discuss next steps, which may include legal support, support in understanding the process or signposting to the BPA or your NGB amongst others. "We work closely with the BPA, their Classification Manager and their Athlete Commission, to ensure that we maintain a positive relationship with them and are up-to-date on current processes and themes within this space, enabling us to advise and support athletes effectively, whilst ensuring confidentiality for our athlete members when appropriate."As with all areas of support, it is our aim to facilitate the best possible outcome, and we will do this with impartial, confidential and expert advice. To request support, email support@britisheliteathletes.org."
