Mediation

With trained mediators, we prioritise early intervention to reach resolutions.
Our team includes trained mediators who can help when a dispute arises. In these instances, we prioritise informal, early intervention to reach a resolution with minimal disruption.

We can speak with the relevant parties to enable a conversation in a safe and open environment. Where mediation is appropriate, we have a trained mediator that can help to resolve the dispute (whether that is with a fellow athlete, a coach or another member of staff).

Mediation is a dispute resolution process wherein a neutral third party, the mediator, facilitates communication and negotiation between parties to help them reach a mutually acceptable agreement. It encourages open dialogue, creates a level of understanding, and empowers parties to find solutions to their conflicts.

Mediation is voluntary, confidential, and flexible, allowing parties to maintain control over the outcome while avoiding the adversarial nature of litigation and formal processes.

We urge athletes to reach out to us and access our mediation if they feel they’re involved in a dispute.

Support pathway

So, what happens when you reach out to the BEAA about mediation? Most importantly, we’ll always try to help.

That might be direct, end-to-end support with your issue through a dedicated Athlete Support Manager, or signposting to someone else who can help you.

We’ll always be there for our members. Find out what happens when you contact us below.

  1. You contact the BEAA for support, or are referred with consent by your NGB.
  2. One of our Athlete Support Managers will respond, usually via email, within one working day.
  3. We will arrange a time to speak to you over the phone to understand your request in your words and ensure we can provide the best support possible.
  4. If your issue is about your safety or someone else’s safety, we follow statutory processes, which may involve a referral to the police, a Local Authority Designated Officer, or the children’s services. This will be done with your consent where possible, and we will provide ongoing confidential advice and support.
  5. If your issue is not about safety and we can support you, we ask you to sign a service-level agreement, and provide support or signposting tailored to your needs.
  6. We will try to understand your concerns and those of any other parties involved to help you reach an agreement. If necessary, this will include formal mediation.
