Five elite British athletes are up for the final Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award for 2023 after another hugely successful month for British sport.
In an athlete-decided award that celebrates both sporting success and personal accomplishments, the five nominees will be voted on by their peers after enjoying months to remember.
The nominees are James Guy (swimming), Adele Nicoll (bobsleigh), Tabby Stoecker (skeleton), Anna Toman, and Struan Walker (both hockey).
Long a successful medallist, James achieved a personal feat by returning to the podium for the 200m freestyle for the first time in seven years at the European Short Course Swimming Championships. In an emotional interview after the race he said: “Seven years is a long time, but never give in. Things happen in life, but don’t give up.”
Adele switched from shot put to bobsleigh just three years ago and began piloting last year. In her first two-woman race with Kya Placide she won Europa Cup bronze and recorded the second-best push in the field. She then made her debut as a pilot at the World Cup, completing six races in seven days.
In her first full World Cup season Tabby won gold in just her second ever World Cup race. She has now finished on the podium in two of her three World Cup outings. She described her expectations pre-season as “pretty low”, only looking to adjust to World Cup standards.
Anna returned to the hockey pitch for her first international in over a year after a knee operation in early 2023. She competed for Great Britain in the FIH Pro League in a narrow 2-1 loss to Argentina, captaining the team on her return.
Finally, Struan also makes the shortlist for his efforts on the hockey field. The 21-year-old made his Great Britain debut with a Player of the Match performance by striking twice to help his side beat the Netherlands 3-2.
Elite athletes can vote for their Athlete of the Month by heading to their latest BEAA email, with the winner to be confirmed shortly.
Please note, only the votes of athletes currently on UK Sport’s World Class Programme will be counted.
Good luck to everyone shortlisted!
