Selection and appeals

We input on policies and provide independent observers in selection meetings.
The process of selection captures all the incidences in which an athlete could be selected onto a programme, or for a competition. These events are often critical periods within a sport’s programmes, and should have clear and accessible policies which explain the process involved. Often, an athlete has the right to appeal non-selection or de-selection.

We help with selection in two ways: by inputting on selection policies to ensure they’re fair and robust, and by providing independent observers when selection decisions are made. Both steps help to improve the transparency of the process.

If an athlete wishes to appeal a decision, we can advise whether there are grounds for a case. Regardless of this advice, we will support the athletethrough an appeals process should they decide to pursue it. We help to draft the relevant documents and can enable access to pro bono legal advice if required.

If you think you might need to make an appeal, you must come to us as soon as possible. Sports have different deadlines for appeals based on the sport itself and the type of selection decision being made.

Support pathway

So, what happens when you reach out to the BEAA about selection? Most importantly, we’ll always try to help.

That might be direct, end-to-end support with your issue through a dedicated Athlete Support Manager, or signposting to someone else who can help you.

We’ll always be there for our members. Find out what happens when you contact us below.

  1. There is a deadline for every appeal, based on the sport and type of selection. Please reach out to us as soon as possible to have the best chance of meeting this deadline.
  2. One of our Athlete Support Managers will respond, usually via email, within one working day.
  3. We ask you to sign a service-level agreement, and provide support or signposting tailored to your needs.
  4. Appealing a selection decision can feel like a frantic time, so in the first instance we help to ensure you understand the process and provide level-headed advice.
  5. If needed, we will help you draft your notice of appeal which is then sent to your sport.
  6. Should the appeal progress to this stage, we can help you access pro bono legal support.
